Best Music for Focus: Scientifically Proven Study Tunes

Untitled design (12)-1When it’s time to knuckle down and focus, music is my non-negotiable. Turns out, science backs me up on this one! Research from Stanford University found that “music moves [the] brain to pay attention.” Their study spotlighted classical tunes from the 1800s as particularly effective.

But not all music is created equal when it comes to study sessions. Here are a few tried-and-tested truths about what works best:

  • Tempo matters
Opt for tracks with a tempo of 60 to 70 beats per minute. This pace is ideal for concentration and focus. Faster music might have you typing faster, but it can scatter your thoughts.
  • Skip the lyrics
We know, we know—it’s hard to part with your favourite sing-alongs. But songs with lyrics can distract more than they help. Keep it instrumental for better results.
  • Keep it chill on the volume
Loud music can be energising, but during study time, you want it in the background, not centre stage. A softer volume helps your mind stay tuned to the task at hand.

Our Top Picks for Study Tunes

We’ve put together a list of music styles perfect for powering through your next study session:

1. Movie Soundtracks

Some soundtracks are just epic for focus. Classical, orchestral scores are especially great—think Hans Zimmer. His work on the Interstellar soundtrack is a masterclass in ambient motivation.

2. Lo-fi Beats & Covers

Lo-fi music is all about mellow vibes, and it’s a fantastic choice for reducing stress and sharpening focus. YouTube and Spotify have heaps of options, from pop-inspired covers to chilled hip-hop beats.
Our pick: Spotify’s LOFI COVERS of Popular Songs 2024 playlist—expect reimagined tracks from John Mayer, Drake, and Linkin Park.

3. Classical Music

The classics are classics for a reason. With no lyrics and slower tempos, they’re study-session gold. Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin are your go-tos.
Our favorite: Beethoven’s Für Elise. It’s soothing, timeless, and perfect background music.

4. Nature Sounds

Rainfall, gentle rivers, rustling leaves—nature sounds can create a calming environment that helps your brain relax into its work. They’re simple, effective, and endlessly soothing.
Pro tip: Rain noises are my personal favorite. There’s nothing like the sound of a storm.
